Mentorship Program

2024 Summer Extern/Intern Applications are now CLOSED.

If you are curious to see if a career in veterinary medicine is right for you, our shadow experience will take you behind the curtain so you can see first hand what life long success can look like working with animals.
This short-term engagement will last a few hours, or maybe a few days, to gain a broad understanding of all the different responsibilities of our entire patient care staff. Based on your specific interests, you’ll be paired with one of our veterinary professionals and you can begin to experience how they serve our patients’ and clients’ needs.

Commit to a full day of shadowing and you will:

Gain valuable insight into our rewarding work.
Accompany your assigned vet to every appointment.
Observe and get beneficial experience.

Immersive Externship

An immersive experience means joining our team, and learning first hand about the industry and how you can blaze your own path to success and fulfillment within it.

Colleges and Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) programs have a variety of different requirements per program. With that, our immersive mentorship experience is a longer term engagement ranging from 6-12 weeks where you work as an employee of Iowa Equine in the Medical Support Staff position. After application, you will work with our education coordinator to ensure that your experience aligns with where you are in your education path, and immersive externships include a focus on a specific area of interest from the following:

Administration
Reproduction
General Medicine
Sports Medicine

Focused Internship

We pride ourselves on providing in depth and effective clinical rotations to propel students toward their careers. Guided by an experienced mentor, we will provide you an in-depth experience specifically catered to the requirements provided by your educational institution. In coordination with your education plan and curriculum, we are able to craft an experience that is right for you to push towards a successful start to your career.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) programs have a variety of different requirements per program. With that, our focused mentorship program offers the experience where you are specifically externing with one of our experienced staff serving as your mentor during that time. After application, you will work with our education coordinator to ensure that your experience aligns with where you are in your education path and the requirements of the clinical rotation you are seeking to fulfill.

Success Veterinary Internship

Year-round beginning June 15
DVM required, must have passed NAVLE

The aim of the Iowa Equine Success Veterinary Internship is to prepare recent
graduates for a long and successful career in general practice. Our veterinary interns are exposed to a diverse range of cases and horses in a variety of disciplines beginning with one-on-one mentorship and progressing to independent case management at the conclusion of the internship. Iowa Equine veterinarians are passionate about the reality of long, happy, successful careers in equine practice and will provide guidance in practice management strategies, staff development, and practice financial literacy. Your internship is the first step of a practice journey that could take you anywhere, hopefully to practice ownership some day!
